Has your child ever streaked naked at your favorite restaurant and yelled, “I’M POOPY, CHANGE ME!” Or set his sister’s favorite stuffed animal on fire? Washed your new leather couch with toothpaste? Has your toddler ever informed the preacher at your church, saying, “I don’t say AWGODDAMNIT, it’s a bad woid!” Has your child ever autographed your entire DVD collection directly on the disk with a permanent ink magic marker? How about flooding your bathroom trying to bathe their stuffed animals? Try this one on for size: You think that you raised a “great” kid, you come home to find that your former honor roll student’s grades have dropped to barely passing, he or she is dating an 18 year old, has been drinking, is experimenting with drugs, and has been stealing to get them. What do you do in these situations? Hide your face in shame? Try to explain it in a bunch of nonsensical words because you haven’t had time to think of a response? Or do you laugh it off with the explanation, “They’re kids! They’ll grow out of it!” Kids are definitely a challenge, but they are definitely worth it and then some! Kids can be the most rewarding investment you ever make and can mirror the inner you. So, hopefully you gain the tools and knowledge you need to both enjoy these precious few years and acquire the respect you deserve of good parenting. You are not alone in your trials and frustration.
